THE ORIGIN OF WINTER FUN
Riding on barrel staves requires real skill! These half-rounded boards, sourced from old barrels and fitted with bindings, replace modern high-tech skis and offer a unique challenge on the slopes.
Just like the pros, participants start with a warm-up round, where they get familiar with the unusual equipment and work on their technique before diving into the competition.
In this nostalgic ski race, styled after days gone by, it’s not just speed that counts. Skill and enthusiasm also play a role in the final score, and those who perform best are celebrated at the awards ceremony.
The curved shape of the barrel staves makes it difficult to keep balance, often resulting in a mini acrobatic show. After such races, sore muscles are common—especially for spectators, a sure sign of the event’s captivating atmosphere!
For a cozy break, we’re happy to serve your group hot tea or punch by the campfire at our Adventure Camp in Spital am Pyhrn. It’s the perfect way to warm up and relax between rounds.

Important informations:
We are happy to hold this event at your desired location on request. Any travel expenses incurred will be charged. A descent with the barrel staves is of course only possible if there is sufficient snow. In the event of bad weather or a lack of snow, an alternative program will be carried out by arrangement. We recommend wearing clothing appropriate to the temperature and weather conditions, ideally in adjustable layers according to the onion shell principle.
